The river supports an important fish community including striped bass, river herring, and hickory shad. Around late March and the beginning of April the striped bass move into the lower Roanoke River around the highway 45 bridge. As the big girls make make their way up river to spawn, their numbers and size steadily increase.
Roanoke River Striper Fishing. The Seasons: Hickory shad kick the season off in March with fantastic light tackle and fly fishing. Striped bass arrive in early April. Lower Roanoke / Albemarle Sound offers year-round opportunities at triple digit days. In the upper Roanoke the striper fishing peaks in mid-April and continues through late May.
